It's hard to see past the gas mask, I know. Despite the untamable mop of curly brown hair and bushy eyebrows to match, there's something about wearing a respirator around town that causes people's eyes to stop before they actually look at you. And I realize it's crazy, just the same as my dad and brother realize it's crazy, but my mom... she's seen the Lyons twins (those girls with the conjoined hips that prove how even money can't buy normal) and so when she looks at us and says: "By god, no child of mine —"

When you love someone, you learn to put up with crazy. So when she started ranting about oil fumes and precautionary measures, we went along with it, because at least this time she wasn't going on about alien abductions or poisoned toothpaste. This was something with an easy solution: wear a mask and she'll remain calm. There are no more panic attacks now, no more frantic wails in the middle of the night — just the four smiles of the Wickham family, only visible in the crinkling of our eyes, lips shielded by "protective" plastic.

When it starts to feel like too much to handle, I just slip out of my mask and away into the wilderness or back alleys of District Five, the sketchy places full of people who know how to keep secrets (and mine is nothing compared to others). Then again, I suppose I'm difficult to recognize with a naked mouth. On those days, maybe my face isn't the only thing I'm supposed to keep hidden from the world, but trouble is kinda like crazy — it's no fun if you don't share it.
