After the disgusting muck that had dominated the last area, some of which still clung to her shoes and the bottoms of her pants, Yaron found this new tower a relief. The forest she had been presented with this morning was peaceful, but lacked the mind-numbing monotony of the sands she had wandered for the better part of three days. In fact, parts were quite pretty, with thick green foliage and deep soil. It was also easier to walk on by far, the solid ground giving purchase to her weapon-turned-walking stick and dragging leg alike.
All of this was combining to make Yaron happier than she had been since her hand had slipped away from Seepie's back at the Cornucopia. Her stomach was full (and the weird swamp water had stayed down, much to her surprise), her leg was hurting less, Shrol seemed to be more or less fine, she was alive, and she was surrounded by living, breathing creatures. She couldn't make use of any of them—the rodents, lizards, and occasional larger animals never stayed near her for more than a few moments, and she didn't have the skill to catch or kill them. For now she was set for food and clothing, though, so she was happy to just watch them. It was nice to hear rustling and know that she wasn't imagining it.
Right now, she was resting against a large pine tree. It didn't hide her as well as some of the other trees would, but a soft layer of needles made the ground more comfortable. Gnawer stood sentinel at her outstretched feet, metal eyes staring into the distance while Yaron watched the nearer foliage, half for entertainment and half warily. The notebook and pen from her bag sat mostly forgotten on her lap, ink dripping off the pen to pool in the pages. Had she paid attention, she might have been disturbed by the image, which was strikingly reminiscent of blood; however, she was more concerned with the small, fuzzy animal that hopped through a nearby bush and right up to her.
"Hey, little guy. What are y- no, get the fuck off!" Yaron hastily rolled up her towel and snapped it at the rodent before it could jump onto her leg. It scuttled away just as hurriedly—but in the same direction it had been going. Frowning, Yaron reached for her bladed staff and looked to her right, peering through the green in search of a threat.

It had been watching The Injured One ever since she laid her hesitant feet within its domain. There had been others, yes, but in this One it could hear the stuttering of her breath and the quiet throb of the burning limb dragging behind her. Even though her Claw gleamed bright and angry in the strange light, the scent of weakness was intoxicating.
It had to have her.
The others were too strong, too risky. It had seen their fighting in the way only it could - strange, abstract thoughts as they lurched, ever so graceless but ready for bloodshed. It had no desire to lose a massive limb, stretched out and up with eight beady eyes swiveling and blinking from the dense canopy ahead. Somehow she had never once looked up to see the bulbous body eclipsing the light, brushing silently through the trees and leaving a web of spun silk in its wake. A giant on silent wings. It had never known fear - never known the reason to fear, as strong as it was - but always knew caution, creeping through with careful steps and drooling fangs until she settled herself down underneath a soft tree as if to rest. It wished to embrace the Injured One, settle its teeth within her nubile flesh and spin until she was simply a shallow husk, a plaything for its amusement. Perhaps it would string the shrunken corpse by the neck, warning all others of the death that lingered unseen?
Its feet anchored itself on firm branches and disturbed a nest of rodents. They were too small to be taken notice, but they saw the grisly appendage and fled, scuttling down the tree and into the One. It twitched its fangs but hesitated; to inject, to kill, it would have to get too close to her Claw, too close to death. It was not stupid like its brethren, no - omnipotent and so very patient. It would wear down the dwindling stamina and drink the veins so dry they cried dust.
A quiet rustling before the massive form dropped down from above, a single wicked limb flying down to club at the One.

"Oh, holy-"
There was no time for profanity or blasphemy, even if she had retained enough mental power to come up with either. Throwing herself to the left took all the time she had, and even using every split second, she barely made it. Only by throwing her backpack up at the last second did she deflect the massive limb falling at her from the sky. With a sharp crunch—the journal snapping? hopefully not her water bottle cracking—the backpack sailed past Gnawer and crashed into the ground several feet away from him. Yaron stared after it for a heartbeat, stunned by the force of its fall.
Then the leg shifted, and she kicked into gear. She had instinctively grabbed her weapon and rolled with it, giving herself a cut cheek but ensuring that she wasn't defenseless. Now she turned it and jabbed upward, only to miss completely as the weight of the weapon pushed her hands back down. Cursing fluidly, she forced herself up and leaned against the tree to try again. This time, her blade went in the direction she meant it to: up.

A chunk of something fell directly past her, but Yaron didn't see what it was. All her attention was zoomed in on the giant fucking spider standing over her.
She couldn't even come up with anything to say about it. Hell, what did she even think about that? Yaron had never had a problem with spiders—or cockroaches, or reptiles, or really anything generally regarded as creepy. There was no point in shrieking over something she could step on. But a spider twice her size? Yeah, that was a problem. That was... that was...
That was probably about to attack her again. Yaron yelped and gripped her halberd tighter, peering into the branches at the few bits of flesh (and eye) she could see. In the absence of any idea about where the next attack would come from, she couldn't rip her eyes away from the body of the spider. How much did that thing weigh? At least she wasn't likely to miss it very often...

Perhaps it had underestimated the Injured One.
Despite wanting to be so very careful, it felt the sharp sting of her Claw slicing across its large head. It recoiled back in rage, skittering to the side in a flash of limbs even as it kicked away her possessions from the makeshift arena. She was still fast despite the limb that refused to work, nestled protectively behind her even as knuckles so tight they turned white gripped the wooden pole. Fangs flickered angrily but it wasn't right - no, not yet, there were still too many holes, too many problems. It had to keep beating away, get her vulnerable and slow.
Venom dripped towards the ground even as it raised up on its hind legs, massive abdomen brushing the dusty floor to crash its weight back towards the smaller figure.

The brunt of its oppressive weight fell to one side, limbs as hard as rock hurtling down in an effort to maim. There was a tremor that shockwaved outwards as it landed, punctuated only by the sharp crack of bones splintering within. That sweet sound took its attention away from the pain seeping into its head, flesh bared and angry for the world to see. Multitudes of eyes flashed even as the coarse hairs stood stark, testing the breeze for a change in outcome.

She wasn't fast enough.
It was funny, in a way. Never mind the screaming pain and the shock of a gargantuan arachnid and the rush of foliage around her as she fell, that one sentence was all she could think. I wasn't fast enough. She didn't feel the pain, although some part of her must because she was screaming, and she couldn't bring herself to be angry because she couldn't fully register what she would be angry about. Although the thud of flesh hitting dirt assured her that her surroundings had never been more solid, everything had gone blurry and soft, impossible to focus on and harder still to grab hold of.
Still, she tried. What else was she to do? Certainly not lie here and let the spider's leg crush her head, easy as it would be. Certainly not run away, unless one of her family's supposed miracles fixed one of her legs. She tried, automatically searching for higher ground as instinct kicked in and dread certainty filled her. Ground meant lack of leverage and lack of leverage meant death. But a broken leg and a shattered foot (was that really a part of her body, that mangled red thing at the end of her leg?) together destroyed any chance she had of throwing herself into battle or even of standing. All she could do was lash out with her two remaining limbs and the weapon still clutched in their locked fingers.

It advanced on her, barely feeling the sting of her Claw as she lashed out in desperation. It had felt the bones snap until its limb, the cry of pain as she had crumpled to the ground. The Injured One was now The Crippled One, ever so close to death but never quite there. The urge to bury its fangs in her flesh and simply drink was proving to be overpowering, but it shifted on the side of cautious as the Claw snapped out, the reach dangerously far.
The forest shook as it circled, abdomen high in the air even as a spurt of silk caught the edge of the tree. It would begin to spin its web, ever so slowly to trap the One that would soon be nestled in its eternal embrace. No Claw or Hot Light would deter the hungry that ached in its endless thorax and expanded to a pain that would throb greater than the streaming hole in its head or the sting in one of many shoulders. It had to have her. Now.
[dice=200+7000] [[attacks Yaron, Bruised Left Knee, 3.5]]
The club of its foot smashed into the One's already broken leg, but there were no more sounds of fragile, snapping bones from the inside. The string of silk attached to its abdomen drew taut and it hovered for a moment, rearing back to strike again.

Filling because reasons. Ow, that hurt but not really. I'm getting annoyed and my head's starting to hurt from that huge chunk she's taken out of me. Let's crush her!

Well damn, somehow I missed that prone figure on the ground. Maybe it's because I keep falling over or whatever. Oh well, next time.
[[Sorry about the mix-up, and yaaaaay no antivenom!]]

Filler because we are running out of time that I do not have if I need to get Yaron antivenom after this. Why do all my tributes get poisoned? Someday I will get through a Games without having to buy antivenom. Someday. Seriously, three out of three is getting ridiculous, what the fuck.

Hallelujah, thank the lord almighty for the small mercies he doth give me. Still panting, Yaron tried to scoot away from the spot where the spider's newest attack had fallen, but her arm screamed in protest. It could take the weight of her bladed pole, but not the force of dragging her body, not without her legs to help. Wanting nothing more than to curl up and cry but knowing that she would be trapped here until only one species breathed, she propped herself up on the knee of her right leg and all but threw the weapon upward, desperate to make contact with that leg before it rose out of reach.

It reared back in pain, something that could be considered a squeal escaping from the malevolent maw as one massive arm began to gush blood. The Claw had struck true, slicing viciously as if there was no resistance presented. The grass drank greedily as it flailed, staggering before falling heavily on its side. Its limbs twitched - they curled in and somehow it managed to ignore the stinging pain of pulling words - once before going still, nothing but the soft drip of venom from its silent fangs penetrating the space. The Crippled One had won.
